When we came up with sueded fleece, we love the touch and feel, but we weren’t really sure how it’s going to print, so we sent it to Tom at Motion Textile to do a test run. There’s no question, the fabric has a great feel, but it’s extremely porous, so his approach two fold: Use textured or distressed artwork (This way, you don’t have to fully penetrate the fabric, but can just print right on top of the surface). Tom’s approach is simple, because he says the sueded fleece fabric really stands on its own, therefore, the printing should just be accenting, or adding to the fabric. Ultimately, the ink is just becoming part of the substrate for an organic and natural finished look. Because our sponge fleece is so premium, it compresses smoothly, even over the heavy seams and pockets, without any texture or breakage. For our design, we topped it off with a four color SPACE print using red, purple, blue and yellow. We recommend printing on our White or Vintage White Street Fleece to really make your design pop. The key is to penetrate the fabric to flatten the fabric out so that you have a smooth and stable printing substrate. Layering down a screen with the low mesh count will help create a smooth surface to print on. We typically start with a 135 mesh count screen for the base layer and then use a 225 mesh count screen for the top layers. Selecting the proper adhesive is very important when printing fleece. For printing jersey knit fabrics, we would generally use a roll-on water-based tack. For fleece, we use an aerosol spray and we spray each and every platen before the garment is loaded on. This is crucial for holding registration on press. Both a web-based spray adhesive or roll-on based pallet adhesive are popular choices when printing fleece. You can always test out different adhesives to see what you prefer. Just make sure the fleece stays put on the platen. An advance tip for printing fleece is to pre flash and flatten the fabrics before the very first print goes down. Run a flash that pre-shrinks the fabric and then the flattener screen is what actually locks the fabric down onto this protective flatten. Taking this extra step before you lay down any ink ensures an ultra smooth print surface on which to lay your design. It’s a quick and easy way to take your print from good to great! When we’re printing fleece, we want to be really careful about controlling the flash temperature on the press. Why is that different than printing on a T-Shirt? Because fleece is really prone to scorching, warping and moving around on press went the flash temperatures are too intense. The general idea is that you want to flash at a lower temperature and at a slightly longer dwell time if needed. For both water based and plastisol inks, we recommend flashing at temperatures between 220 and 260 degrees. This will reduce the risk of your garment streaking or distorting on the press. The best advice for printing on fleece is actually in the design stage. Designing to the substrate is what we call it, so creating designs that are actually print-friendly on fleece. Trying to minimize color count, minimize registration, limit the amount of detail in the design, that’s going to be your best bet for getting the best results. We hope these tips were helpful! We came out with three neutral colors for our fleece this year: tan, sand dune and vintage white. One of things from a printing perspective is to get a really bright neon fluorescent color. Generally printers tend to just put a tremendous amount of ink down and we don’t want to do that- we want to keep a nice soft hand to it. We’re going to show you how you can actually apply multiple layers of neon ink and get a super bright vibrant look while retaining a nice soft hand. One of the worst things, when you put a really heavy layer of ink down? You get a nasty texture, kind of an orange peel texture, is what they call it. We want to avoid that with a nice smooth texture. Here’s how we do it:

Split your print into four separate screens to set up for four thin layers of ink. We want to have a nice bright print, but with minimal ink deposit.

Print a white under base (135 Mesh). Flash it.

Print a secondary white under base (225 Mesh). Flash that.

Print the first layer of neon green (225 Mesh). Flash it.

Print the last layer of neon green (225 Mesh). You guessed it- flash it.

The most important thing to note is all of the mesh counts are very high. Mesh meaning, we’re printing really really thin layers of ink, but stacking them on top of each other to get a really clean, bright print!
